Description
A scarce map of Hong Kong, compiled by the Italian Catholic missionary Simeone Volonteri (1831-1904) and published in 'Les Missions Catholiques, 6.me Année'. The map has both Latin and Chinese characters, making it the first biligual map of the colony.
Volonteri was sent to Hong Kong by the 'Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions' in 1860, remaining there until 1870. Despite having no cartographic training he surveyed the the surrounding Chinese mainland surreptitiously, publishing his 'Map of the San-On District, (Kwangtung Province)' in Leipzig in 1866.
This smaller map of Hong Kong itself is based on his first map, with some updating. It was published after his promotion to bishop.
