Description

An early map of classical Rome, based on the detailed archaeological survey by Pirro Ligorio (c.1510-83), a scholar of the ancient monuments. It shows the city at its apogee, with buildings like the Colosseum, the Theatre of Marcellus, the Circus Maximus and the Baths of Diocletian shown in profile. It was engraved by Frans Hogenberg and first published in the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first systematic atlas of town plans. This example come from Jansson's ''Theatrum Celebriorum Urbium Italiae...'.
