Description

A charming prospect of Constantinople taken from the quayside of Scutari, with various small boats being unloaded in the foreground. Ambroise- Louis Garneray (1783-1857) had a varied career as a French corsair (privateer), slaver, and, after eight years in captivity in Brtitish prison hulks off Portsmouth, first Peintre de la Marine ('official painter of the Navy'), writer and museum director. He was awarded the Légion d'honneur n 1852
