Description

An plate from the September 1773 issue of 'The Gentleman’s Magazine', illustrating three of the items in the newspaper. Figure 1 is a reversed copy of the Sidney Parkinson illustration of a Maori waka taua, which had been published in the official account of Cook's First Voyage earlier that year. Figure 2 shows a breadfruit, also an illustration from Cook, which Joseph Banks proposed as a cheap way to feed slaves in the West Indies. Figure 3 has images of both sides of an obsidional coin, a lozenge-shaped shilling, minted during the siege of Newark (1645-6, during the Civil War, from from silver gathered from the besieged population.
