Description

A map of the Eastern Seaboard from Chesapeake Bay south through Georgia to northern Florida, published in 'De Nieuwe En Onbekende Weereld'. It is decorated with two cartouches: the title is on a vignette of braves suspending an animal skin from a tree; the scale depicts native dress and bathers. It is based on Willem Blaeu's map of c.1638, which was the most accurate of the area, but with these new, more decorative cartouches. The cartography has not been updated, so the two mythical lakes are still in the Appalachians with the French flag despite English colonisation of the area. The plate was also used in John Ogilby's 'America' the same year.

Condition:

Trimmed into plate at bottom.
