Description

A composite image, with a view of the Vatican from St Peter's Basilica to the Castel de' San Angelo;, a plan of the complex drawn on a trompe l'oeil tapestry being lifted by putti; and panelled lateral borders containing 14 views of events in the election of a new pope. The plate was first published in 'Rome Ancienne et Moderne', Mortier's enlarged issue of Blaeu's townbook of Rome. Another edition was published by Alberts in 1724 with no alterations.
