Description

Munster's map of Central Asia after Claudius Prolemy, showing eastern Scythia and Serica, two kingdoms to the north of India and China. Of interest are the vignettes around the map derived from classical texts. At the top are Anthropophagi (or Androphagi, 'man-eaters'), cannibals described by Herodotus. Above right are the Blemmyes, with faces in their chests, although Stabo sites them in Nubia. Below right is a cynocephalus, a dog-headed man, described by Ctesias, Top left is a Sciapode of Taprobana, using a giant foot as a sunshade. Finally, bottom right are pigmies waging war with their mortal enemies, the cranes.

Condition:

Slight worming in bottom margin.
