Description

A rare map showing from Moscow south to the Black Sea, published to illustrate the Russo-Turkish War of 1735-39. The extensive title cartouche features various angels and putti, the Imperial Eagle and a medallion portrait of Tzar Peter I. Russia was attempting to gain access to the Black Sea, but after several successful campaigns in the Crimea, the withdrawal of the Austrians from the war forced Russia to the negotiating table. In the Treaty of Nis Russia gave up its claims to Crimea and Moldavia in return for being allowed to build a port at Azov, although with no fortifications or navy there.
