Description
A large and detailed map of the moon, produced in association with the Nature and Science Museum of Japan. The map accurately depicts the names and positions of key surface features and presents an unconventional view of the lunar surface with south orientated at the top.
The map displays half of the moons surface and is divided into four quadrants along east-west and north-south lines. The southwestern area is designated as the first quadrant, the northwestern as the second, the northeastern as the third, and the southeastern as the fourth.
The authors note that most of the patterns and features shown can be observed with a small telescope, while some may even be seen with binoculars.
Translating lunar names into Japanese was a difficult feat and included a number of people; Dr. Miyamoto Shotaro, director of Hanayama Observatory; Dr Nakano Shigeru, Medical professor, Astronomical Society of Japan; Tsuneo Saeki, Chief Astronomist, Osaka Electric Science Museum; and Sanenobu Fukui, Lunar Section, East Asian Astronomical Society.
