Description

A medieval plan of ancient Jerusalem and the surrounding country as far as Bethany. It was drawn by Pietro Vesconte (fl. 1310-30) for Marino Sanudo's 'Liber Secretorum Fidelibus de Crucis' c.1320, a manuscript work presented to Pope Clement V to encourage a new crusade. This engraving was the first time that the original map was published, retaining the original's lack of a conventional single reading view. Thus the letters, buildings and palm trees are drawn at random angles.

Condition:

Trimmed into printed area on right, paper rebuilt with manuscript fill.
