Description

A very fine and large sea chart depicting the routes taken in 1685 & 1686 from Brest to Siam by Jesuit missionaries. The Western coast of Australia is marked out with notes on the dates and by whom the various bits of land were discovered. The coasts of the various countries especially Africa are well supplied with town and landmark names. With two decorative cartouches, one containing a view and map of Table Mountain and the Cape of Good Hope (the last provisioning point before crossing the Indian Ocean), the other containing the title and three roundels enclosing maps of Siam (Ayutthaya), Louvo (Lopburi) and Batavia (Jakarta).

Condition:

Left and right margins rebuilt with contemporary paper with some minor manuscript reinstatement.
