An 18th century map of the Holy Land

Homann's map of the Holy Land, extending from Egypt north to Sidon (modern Lebanon), based on the influential cartography of Nicolas Sanson. The map combines contemporary geographic knowledge with biblical history, notably illustrating the division of the land among the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The route of the Exodus is traced across the desert in a detailed inset at lower right depicting the journey from Egypt to Canaan. A richly decorative cartouche presents a biblical scene of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments. Published in the 'Neuer Atlas'.
