17th century view of Stonehenge

A fanciful view of Stonehenge and the sacred landscape of Salisbury Plain, with a three-point key set in a Latin text description of the monument, including theories that it was built by Merlin and that they could be made of a cement rather than solid rock. A poem, written by Alexander Neckham (1157-1217, Abbot of Cirencester Abbey), begins ''Noble is the stone structure, the Giants' Choir...' and includes the names of Uthor Pengradon and Hengist. It was published in Blaeu's 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' atlas, from the second Latin edition, issued during the English Civil War.
