Description
A map of the East Indies, showing from Pakistan east to China, with Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia & Indonesia, published in John Speed's atlas, 'The Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World', the first English atlas of the world.
The first edition of the atlas, published 1627, contained maps engraved by Dutch engravers such as Abraham Goos; however this is one of six new maps engraved by Francis Lamb for the enlarged 1676 edition. These showed areas that had gained in importance because of England's increased role abroad. Most dealt with English interest in the Americas, but this shows the trading zone of the East India Company.
