Description

An unusual map, attempting to show London in the century before the Norman Conquest. It depicts the city walls with its gates and forts, and a handful of sites inside, including the pre-Norman St Paul's Cathedral (burnt 1087), the Palace of Athelstan (king 927-939), an episcopal palace and a market place. Outside the walls are the old Roman roads, Roman burial grounds and 'Barbacan' and 'Smeeth Felde'. South of the Thames is an engraved text history of London from Alfred defeating the Danes in 884 to the death of Ethelred the Unready in 1013, and a list of 'Remarkable Personges'. The Darton family of publishers specialised in educational publications, including atlases, maps and games.
