Pieter van der Aa (1659–1733) was a leading European publisher of maps, atlases, and illustrated volumes in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He joined the Leiden booksellers’ guild in 1677, established his own workshop in 1683, and was appointed printer to Leiden University in 1694, later becoming the city’s official printer in 1715.

Van der Aa reissued out-of-print works and copied earlier maps by notable cartographers, often enhancing them with decorative flourishes. His most ambitious work, the Galerie Agréable du Monde (1729), comprised 66 parts and over 3,000 plates covering geography and world cultures.
