Matthäus Seutter

Matthäus Seutter (1678–1757) was a German engraver, publisher, and cartographer based in Augsburg. He trained in Nuremberg in the workshop of Johann Baptist Homann before establishing his own publishing business in Augsburg in the early eighteenth century.

Seutter issued a large corpus of engraved maps, town plans, and atlases, many derived from earlier Homann models and other contemporary sources. In 1731 he was appointed Imperial Geographer (Geographus Caesareus) by Emperor Charles VI. After his death in 1757, his publishing business and copperplates passed to his son-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter, who continued issuing revised impressions.
