Description
A pair of maps attemping to depict the French Trappist order as natural successors to the early Christian hermits of the Thebaid in Egypt in the 3 & 4th centuries.
The left map shows Egypt, the Holy Land and Cyprus, marking the locations of the various hermits, with vignettes and biographies of St Paul of Thebes (c.227-c.341) and Anthony the Great (c.251-356), visited by the devil, and a general engraved text concerning hermits.
The right map shows the environs of La Trappe Abbey in Orne, France, from where the Trappist order of Cistercians took their name, with vignettes of Armand Jean le Bouthillier de Rancé (1626-1700), founder of the order and St Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), an early Cistercian leader. The title calls the abbey 'The New Thebaid'.
