A map of Egypt, showing the course of the Nile up to the Cataracts. Frenchman Paul Lucas (1664-1737) visited Egypt several times and published descriptions of his discoveries. His accounts, however, are regarded as being unreliable, a charge borne out by the odd illustrations lower left, which include a portrait of Lucas sketching antiquities.
